The 2018 Farm Bill federally legalized hemp and hemp-derivatives with a restriction that delta-9 THC content must be below 0.3%. State regulations vary. North Carolina law mirrors the federal law. Proposed bill HB 563 seeks to address current ambiguity and explicitly legalize and regulate consumable hemp products.

Hemp and Marijuana come from the same plant (cannabis sativa). The distinction between the two is a legal one, whether or not the delta-9 THC content is above or below 0.3%. Hemp is a cannabis sativa plant that has been bred to have delta-9 THC content below 0.3% in compliance with federal law.

Delta-8 is a similar but slightly different chemical compound that can also be extracted from hemp. It tends to have a milder and slightly different intoxicating effect than delta-9 if consumed in similar amounts. However, delta-8 has become popular because it does not have the same legal concentration limit as delta-9 and thus can be manufactured in greater concentration. We prefer the effect of delta-9 so our products use that compound exclusively.

The FDA does not currently regulate hemp-based products. Customers should do their own research on the effects of hemp and marijuana to make a personal informed choice. Pregnant women should be especially careful and heed the similar warnings to alcohol.

Individual results will vary but typically you will feel a pleasant relaxed, euphoric feeling within 30 minutes of consumption. We recommend starting with a 1 oz serving the first time around.

Delta Spirits can be added to any beverage or consumed on its own. It has a mild flavor with a subtle taste and aroma of cannabis. It works particularly well as a one-to-one substitute for vodka, rum or tequila. Here’s one of our favorite easy recipes, a riff on a traditional Paloma:

-1oz delta spirits

-5oz sparkling water

-Squeeze and garnish with a slice of grapefruit

-Serve over ice in a rocks glass

While many employers and institutions have softened their stance on personal use of hemp and marijuana, a drug test may detect delta-9 THC derived from hemp in the same way it would after marijuana consumption. In other words, take a break if you’ve got a big job interview coming up.
